John Francome MBE joins Norfolk Dog Day prize winners for a game of golf at Royal West Norfolk Golf Club
At the 2009 Norfolk Dog Day, one of the auction prizes was a round of Golf at the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club, Brancaster with John Francome MBE - 7 times Champion Jockey, racehorse trainer, commentator and author.
The winning bidder was Jeremy Robson from Norwich and his business partner, Alistair Fish. Hosting the game were Sir William and Lady Goodenough and their dog Badger. The game took place on Friday 30th April after a lunch in the Clubhouse where everyone got to know each other, swapped stories and jokes whilst trying to assess each others handicaps. Jeremy Robson's views on the game are as follows:
A benign (no horizontal rain) and sunny Royal West Norfolk saw John and Alistair tee off as the leading players in the afternoon foursomes. The pairings of Sir William and John versus Jeremy and Alistair were perfectly matched with neither team gaining any significant advantage. At the turn Jeremy and Alistair had the upper hand (2 up) but a sprinkling of rain saw Sir William and John rally. By the end of the 16th it was back to all square and a tidy par at the 17th by Sir William and John saw them take the lead going to the 18th. Off the tee Jeremy found the fairway and Alistair then put the pair's ball on the edge of the green. Unfortunately John's approach found the bunker and despite an excellent bunker shot by Sir William, Jeremy and Alistair' four won the hole and squared the match. A perfect result for a perfect afternoon!
Our thanks go to the the Royal West Norfolk Golf Club who have kindly offered us another round of golf, to be played in 2011, which will be up for auction at this year's Dog Day on August 8th at Sennowe Park, Guist. Alternatively you can bid in advance for this fantastic prize - see the Silent Auction section of the Norfolk Dog Day website.
